immigration minister marc millers says Canada to put cap on international students to ease pressure on housing. in the first and second quarters.
In Canada, where there’s a rising issue of joblessness and a housing crunch, Immigration Minister Marc Miller is thinking about limiting the number of international students coming into the country. This idea is to ease the pressure on housing in the first and second quarters of this year, as per a report by CTV News.
Miller mentioned that he’s considering putting a cap on how many international students can come, but the government hasn’t said exactly how much they’ll reduce immigration. Miller wants to make it clear that restricting international students won’t solve everything.
He explained, “The federal government needs to talk with the provinces to make sure those provinces not doing their part cut back on these numbers.” Miller finds the large number of international students troubling, saying it shows a system that’s getting out of hand. The government’s plan is to welcome 485,000 immigrants in 2024 and then 500,000 in both 2025 and 2026.
Talking about international students, Miller said, “We need to do our jobs, making sure our system checks if people can afford to come to Canada and verifying offer letters.” About 300,000 temporary residents, including international students and migrant workers, arrived in Canada in the third quarter of 2023.
Miller also stressed the need to look at how the increasing number of immigrants, both permanent and temporary, is affecting different areas. He mentioned, “Now it’s time for us to talk about the numbers and the impact it’s having in certain places.”
In addition to housing, Miller pointed out that the government needs to bring down the average age of the workforce.
