Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s team to check India’s possible involvement in Canadian elections. China denies doing this.
On Wednesday, a group looking into potential outside interference in Canada asked the government to share info about India’s possible involvement in Canadian elections. This could make the already tense relationship between Ottawa and New Delhi worse.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau‘s team started this group in September to check if other countries, like China, were trying to influence Canadian elections. China denies doing this. The group asked the government on Wednesday for documents about India’s alleged interference in the 2019 and 2021 elections.
The group, led by Judge Marie-Josee Hogue, will also check how information moves within the government on these issues, see what actions were taken, and figure out if the government is good at stopping outside interference. They’ll give suggestions on these matters too. The group is supposed to give a first report by May 3 and a final one by the end of the year.
India and Canada’s relations have been tense lately. Canada accused Indian agents of being involved in the murder of Sikh separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in British Columbia last year. India denies this, and no one has been charged in the case. The Indian High Commission in Ottawa didn’t respond immediately to a request for comment on Wednesday.
