At IPL 2024 Auction, the Punjab Kings messed up and bid for a wrong player, Shashank Singh, for 20 lakhs. The player wasn’t thrilled of this.
The Punjab Kings messed up big time in the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL) auction by picking the ‘wrong player.’ Once they realized the blunder, they tried to sort it out with the auctioneer, Mallika Sagar. Unfortunately, she said the bid was done, and there was no turning back. The player caught up in this mess was the untested Indian talent, Shashank Singh. Despite being auctioned off, he probably wasn’t thrilled because the team that bid for him didn’t really want him.
In the auction room, all the teams had lists of players on their laptops. They did their homework before the auction, figuring out which players they needed, whether they were well-known or not.
But, Ness Wadia, Preity Zinta, and their crew slipped up at the auction table. They confused Shashank Singh from Chattisgarh with someone else. By the time they realized the mix-up, Shashank had already been sold.
The scenes in the auction room were like nothing seen before. The Punjab Kings ended up making a joke out of their own auction plan.
Here’s how PBKS ended up with the ‘unwanted’ Shashank Singh for INR 20 Lakh:
Shashank’s turn came up fast in the auction, with PBKS and other teams eyeing uncapped Indian players in the INR 20 lakh price range. When Shashank’s name was called, Preity Zinta raised the paddle after talking to her team. Since no other team bid for him, he got snapped up, and the hammer came down.
As Mallika moved on to the next set of players, starting with Tanay Thyagrajan, PBKS realized their blunder. Preity, Wadia, and the rest found out they mistook Shashank for another player.
“Did you get the name wrong? You don’t want Shashank?” Mallika asked. “We’re talking about Shashank Singh. But the hammer has fallen. Players No. 236 and 237 both went to you.”
Wadia seemed unhappy with the sale, but Mallika stood firm, saying the hammer had fallen.
“I believe the hammer has come down for 237 (Shashank) as well,” she said.
Even though they didn’t want him in the first place, PBKS had no choice but to add Shashank to their team in the IPL 2024 auction.
