in a police shooting a 27-year-old black woman who called 911 for help with domestic violence at home with her boyfriend was shot dead.
On the night of December 4th in Los Angeles, a Black woman called 911 for help with a difficult situation at home involving her boyfriend. Soon after, the police arrived, but things went wrong, and she tragically lost her life in a police shooting.
During that night, a 27-year-old named Niani Finlayson urgently dialed 911, explaining problems with her boyfriend and signs of a physical fight. The police came quickly, heard the argument, and forcefully entered her apartment. There, they found Niani holding a large kitchen knife. Reportedly, she threatened to harm her boyfriend for mistreating her nine-year-old daughter. A confrontation unfolded, resulting in the police firing shots, right in front of her distressed daughter.
Niani was taken to the hospital but didn’t survive. The police are currently investigating. However, the family disagrees with the official version, saying Niani sought help because she was harmed by her ex-boyfriend. Their aim is justice for her untimely death.
Notably, Deputy Ty Shelton, involved in this tragic event, has a history with similar cases. In 2020, he was part of another incident where a person lost their life during a domestic violence call. The grieving family of the woman in the recent incident is asking for accountability for Shelton’s actions.
The nine-year-old daughter of the deceased woman spoke at a press conference, expressing deep sorrow for missing her mom. The family has filed a legal claim against the county and sheriff’s department, accusing them of wrongful death, assault, and violations of civil rights. Additionally, they’ve started a fundraiser in her memory, aiming to collect $30,000.
